In 1981, a big step forward in community service happened when the Garrison First Responders were added to the fire department. First Responders are first on the scene at any medical related incident in Garrison and surrounding areas. They provide professional emergency medical care until the arrival of either the North Benton, Dysart or La Porte City ambulances. Initial training received by the First Responders varies from fifty to over one hundred hours depending upon the level of certification they desire to achieve. In addition, the First Responders are required to achieve recertification training requirements every two years.

Their meetings are held on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at the Emergency Services building.

In July of 2002, the First Responers purchased an Automatic External Defibrillator with all the crew members being trained on how to use it at their July meeting.
For the most part, the Garrison First Responders are financially self sufficient. They do receive a
$1000 a year from the City's budget but most of their income is due to fund raisers and donations that they receive from the public. If you would like to donate to this vital entity of our community, please contact Cindy Pattee at 319-477-6121.
